We are a Traditional Coven located in the Norfolk - Virginia Beach area of Virginia. We practice a unique form of Witchcraft called the Vanic Tradition, which we have synthesized from British Traditional Craft, the historical lore of Medieval Witchcraft, and what is known of Old English Witchcraft and it's Scandinavian sister practice known as Seidr. Our goal in formulating the Vanic Tradition is to create a truly workable structure/practice that incorporated our affinity with the medieval lore of witchcraft, our love of Freyja and Freyr, and an earth-based philosophy of peace, love and freedom. In creating the Vanic Tradition, we have endeavored to keep it simple, economical, down-to-earth, and powerful. The Vanic Tradition is unique from all other Wiccan/ Witch Traditions in many ways. Some of these are:
We do not institute a priesthood, hierarchy or degree system of any kind.
All Witches in a Vanic Circle are considered equal. No one is above or below another.
We us the term Circle as opposed to coven, because "coven" was a derogatory term given by the Christian Church. the old English witches used the word "ring."
We consider ourselves Witches and not Wiccan. We do not adhere to Wiccan moral or ethical standards, codes or tenets. We do not feel that they accurately reflect the reality of today's world, which is the same today as it was in days of yore.
We worship and honor the germanic gods and goddesses of peace, love and fertility known in Scandinavia as the Vanir. Of these, Freyr and Freyja (the Lord and Lady) are the highest.
We practice all rituals skyclad (in the nude).
We practice the Great Rite in actuality.
We have removed all foreign elements of Kabbla and Eastern Mysticism, and utilize very little ritual ceremony/structure.
We make great use of "earth-magic," most notably that of herbs.
We do not adhere to, in fact we utterly shun, gender double standards.
We endeavor to shed the social/cultural norms placed/forced upon us by the society in which we live.
We do not recognize the notions of "black" or "white" witchcraft, nor those of "good" or "evil" witchcraft.
We actually teach our witches witchcraft - not philosophy/theology.
If you feel that the Vanic Tradition is for you, please contact us to begin a possible friendship and entry into Othala Circle. We are currently accepting new members of like mind. New members are accepted by rotating gender to maintain balance. We are currently seeking a female witch to become part of our family.
